Big Sky Observatory (BSO) The Big Sky Observatory is owned and operated by the Big Sky Astronomical Society and is situated on land that we lease from Alberta Environment. The observatory is based on a modified SkyShed design. It is 12-feet wide and 16-feet long. The observatory is home to an 11" Celestron (C11) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, which once belonged to Dr. Karl Ivarson, before he donated it to us. The Big Sky Observatory is located adjacent to the Twin Valley Dam, which is on Secondary Highway 529, midway between Highway 2 and Highway 23. The GPS coordinates of the observatory are 50° 13' 48" (50.23°) North and 113° 24' 00" (113.40°) West. A couple of days later the observatory was featured on the television news. By clicking on the YouTube video below, you can watch this TV news story. Big Sky Observatory Clear Sky Chart The chart below is a special weather forecast for the Big Sky Observatory. It shows, at a glance, when it will be cloudy or clear over the next two days. Therefore, it allows visitors to the observatory to know in advance if the weather will be good for astronomical observing. The Clear Sky Chart is constantly being updated and more information is available if you click on the chart. Clear Sky Charts are provided by Attilla Danko and the forecast data comes from a numerical weather model run by the Canadian Meteorological Centre.
