Event Schedule
National Star PartySaturday, July 29, 20178:00 PM to MidnightThe Royal Astronomical Society of Canada is sponsoring a National Star Party to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday and they have invited all astronomy organizations from coast to coast to hold a public star party on July 29, 2017.
The Big Sky Astronomical Society will be participating in this National Star Party and so please come out and join us at the Big Sky Observatory. If it's clear that night, visitors will be able to observe the first quarter Moon, as well as Jupiter and Saturn. You will also be able to purchase solar eclipse glasses for the upcoming solar eclipse, which will occur on August 21, 2017. |
Please note that all visitors to the Big Sky Observatory use the site AT THEIR OWN RISK. The Big Sky Astronomical Society, its Officers and Directors, and its Members and Volunteers, will NOT be held responsible for any injuries or accidents that may occur while you are visiting the site. The utmost care should always be exercised while you walk around the site, especially at night. All visitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight and arrive before sunset so that they can familiarize themselves with the site before dark. You may be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival.
14th Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Observing Event
8:00 PM to 1:00 AM (each night)
This annual event has become so popular, we decided to do it on two consecutive nights this year. So come out to the Big Sky Observatory (BSO) on Friday OR Saturday night and enjoy the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. In addition to meteors, you will also have the opportunity to look through the observatory telescope and view the Ring Nebula (M57) and the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules (M13). We will also observe Jupiter and Saturn.
This is a public event and there is no charge for admission, although donations are very much appreciated. We recommend that you bring a flashlight, lawn chair, bug spray, and warm clothing. You may also want to bring a camera, binoculars, or a small telescope. We encourage you to arrive before dark because it's difficult to find the observatory after dark, if you've never been there before. If you are interested in spending the night, you may do so by registering at the Twin Valley Campground, which is conveniently located right next to the BSO.

Partial Solar Eclipse
Monday, August 21, 201710:20 AM to 12:50 PMWe regret to inform you that we will NOT be able to provide you with an opportunity to view the upcoming solar eclipse safely through one of our telescopes.
As seen from Alberta, this will be a partial solar eclipse, however, from many parts of the United States, it will be a total solar eclipse and for that reason several of our members will be in the USA on the day of the eclipse. Hence, we will not be here to operate the telescopes at our observatory. We will be selling solar eclipse glasses at the observatory on July 29, August 11, and August 12. These glasses will allow you to observe the eclipse safely from wherever you happen to be on August 21. |
