Over the years, there have been many newspaper stories written about the Big Sky Astronomical Society and the Big Sky Observatory. There have even been a few news stories that have appeared on television. We are in the process of going through our archives and will be posting these news stories here, as time permits.

Solar EclipseThe Big Sky Astronomical Society arrived at Emerson Lake, in High River, with solar eclipse glasses and a few telescopes that were equipped with solar filters. We were greeted by approximately 200 people who came out to view one of nature's most impressive events.
Although the weather was not ideal, we were able to catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse each time the sullen storm clouds parted. Thank you to everyone who came out to view this most amazing celestial event and a special thank you to Kyle Bakx and the videographer from CBC News (Calgary). |

In 2004, the National Research Council held a contest for amateur astronomers in which they were given an opportunity to submit a proposal outlining what celestial object they would image if given an opportunity to use the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the MegaCam (340-megapixel camera) for one hour.
The Big Sky Astronomical Society proposed taking an image of the Pleiades star cluster, also known as M45, and our proposal was selected and the image was then captured on our behalf by professional astronomers. In May 2005, we were presented with our prize - a one-of-a-kind plaque-mounted image of the Pleiades - at the annual meeting of the Canadian Astronomical Society, which was held in Montreal. From time-to-time, you can see this beautiful 32" by 42" plaque-mounted image on display at the Big Sky Observatory.
